Obituary of Armanda Amy Algiere
Please share a memory of Armanda to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Amanda (Amy) Algiere was born January 13, 1924 to Tyrolean Alpine
parents, Guglielmo and Maria Pinamonti (nee Rigotti) while they were
living in an Italian colony in Carmaux, France. By the time she was five,
she had lived in France and Isera, Italy; visited Tuenno, Italy where she
was fascinated by her aunt and uncle’s grocery store and dreamt of
opening a store someday; crossed the Atlantic by ship and settled in
Greenpoint, where brother Renato (Sonny) was born two years later.
Soon WWII industries flourished, luring her to leave high school
midway and enter the world of work. After marrying Louis Algiere,
October 6, 1946, the couple chose Forest Hills as an ideal place to raise
a family and develop a floor-covering business. Laura and Gerald were
already on board. Fine choice! Ronald was born there and Amanda
remained for 70 years, eventually earning the unofficial title, “Mayor of
Metropolitan Ave.”
Both Amy and Lou were active in the community and at Our Lady of
Mercy. Known for her creativity, Amanda designed scenery and
costumes for many a parish play, even while decorating windows for her
“dream come true” – our family carpet store. In later years she became
an entrepreneur in antiques and flea markets
After Lou passed away in 1993, Mom became more active in the
Trentino Club, re-connecting with her Alpine culture, and finally, in her
90’s joined Mercy’s Golden Age Club.
In 2024, Amanda moved to Maple Ridge Lodge, VT to be near family. It
was there that she passed into eternal life on the feast of Our Lady of
Sorrows, the same day as her mother 29 years earlier.
