My Aunt was a tough cookie. She always said what was on her mind and stood by her beliefs. She could be curt but loving and had an incredible laugh. I was witness to this laugh often growing up - mostly about my wardrobe. She’d look at me and say, “What’s up Shell?!” while eyeballing me up and down with a guffaw followed by this infectious, belly cramping laughter that would go on for a bit and then she would hug and kiss me hello, continuing to crack up loudly in my ear.
My earliest memory of her is her bringing me to get my ears pierced when I was 7 as a communion gift. I was so excited but nervous to be alone with her but she made me feel so special that day.
The next memory I have is of her looking at me from across a campgrounds on a family vacation upstate where we were going to a frontier town for the day. I was in a ridiculous outfit that resembled Tarzan’s Jane with two different color stockings, white heels and one long white glove. I was a sight to see and she let me know every time she laid her eyes on me that day. I could hear her hysterically laughing from across the town square and after the cowboy shows.
As a kid, it upset me but we really came into a lovely relationship as I got older. She respected me for my freedom of expression but just didn’t get it. You know she was always dressed to the nines with perfect hair and nails and couldn’t imagine spiked hair and black lipstick.
Our last text conversations were about our puppies. She was gushing about how Ruby brought her such joy. There are small things we can hold onto. Moments where there’s no pain or worry. Memories of hope and laughter. That is how I choose to remember Aunt Dor, hugging me and uncontrollably laughing in my ear. ♥️
